DEF Explained

What Is DEF and Why Is Demand
Growing in Latin America?

67.5%
Demineralized Water Combined with 32.5% automotive-grade urea
2–3%
Of Diesel Fuel Usage Estimated DEF consumption rate per OEM data
50–75
Gallons of Diesel Per 1 gallon of DEF used on average
100%
SCR Compatible All diesel engines with SCR systems require DEF

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a non-toxic, colorless solution of 67.5% demineralized water and 32.5% automotive-grade urea. It is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel engines equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to reduce harmful NOx emissions.

DEF is not optional — vehicles equipped with SCR technology cannot run without it. As Latin American and Caribbean governments adopt stricter diesel emissions standards (Euro IV, Euro V, and Euro VI equivalents), the number of SCR-equipped trucks, buses, and heavy machinery in these markets is growing rapidly.

This means demand for DEF in Latin America is increasing every year. Importers who establish a reliable US supply chain now are positioned to lead their local market.

📊 Market insight: As diesel fleets in Latin America upgrade to Euro V/VI-equivalent engines to meet new regulations, DEF demand in the region is projected to grow significantly over the next 5 years. Supply relationships established today become long-term competitive advantages.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Latin American and Caribbean DEF importers.

Yes. RUDSON® AZUL DEF meets ISO 22241 and is compatible with all diesel engines equipped with SCR technology — including European trucks (Volvo, Scania, Mercedes, MAN) and American trucks (Kenworth, Peterbilt, International) commonly used throughout Latin America.
We provide a Certificate of Analysis (COA), Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and product specification documentation for every export order. We can also advise on the correct HS tariff code for DEF in your market. For private label orders, all documentation is issued under your brand name.
Minimum orders vary by package size. We recommend container-level orders for the best unit economics on export — our team will help you calculate the optimal container mix. Use our Quotation Generator for volume pricing or schedule a call to discuss your specific needs.
Yes. Our private label program is popular with Latin American distributors who want to build their own brand locally. We manufacture and package the DEF under your brand — you handle local distribution. Contact us to discuss the program and MOQ details.
Yes. Our team is bilingual and we regularly work with English and Spanish-speaking clients across Latin America and the Caribbean. You can reach us via WhatsApp at +1 (786) 842-0184 for a quick response.
DEF should be stored between 12°F and 80°F (-11°C to 27°C) in a dry, ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. In tropical climates, covered warehouse storage is recommended. Short-term exposure to higher temperatures does not affect product quality. Consult the SDS sheet for full storage guidelines. Only store DEF in stainless steel or HDPE containers — avoid aluminum, copper, or brass.
